The Dearly Departed

by

This is another Elinor Lipman, the latter-day Jane Austen.   The novel starts with the accidental death (carbon monoxide leak in the furnace)  of about to be married Margaret and Miles.  Margaret’s daughter, Sunny, and Mile’s son, Fletcher, are notified and first meet at the funeral.  There the fun starts, with instant dislike.  Fletcher is traveling with his boss, anorexic Emily Ann, who is running for congress.  (Another pair who can’t stand each other.)  Sunny is back in the hometown she thought she had left behind forever and is first looked after by Joey Loach, chief of police, and later well looked after, as he has had a crush since high school.

Lipman always delights me as she tells the story of tangled lives, which always turn out well.
