James Patterson

James Patterson’s track record as an author is probably unparalleled.  According to a news story in the July 24 issue of the Journal News,  he has sold more than 300 million books and holds the Guinness World Record for the most No. 1 New York Times best-sellers.  Besides his adult books, he has also ventured into the juvenile and young adult markets.  His newest book, “Homeroom Diaries” is the story of Margaret Clarke and how she uses the a diary to deal with the stresses of high school.

Writing is obviously very important to Patterson, but what he cares about more is getting kids to read.  He recently donated a copy of his book “Middle School:  The Worst Years of My Life” to every sixty-grader in the New York City and Chicago school systems.  He has founded the ReadKiddoRead.com website with reading suggestions for young readers.  It also makes available reviews, book giveaway contests, and resources for educators.

He has also pledged to give one million dollars to independent bookstores as part of his Saving Bookstores, Saving Lives campaign.  In order to be eligible, a book store must be independently owned and must have a functioning children’s book section.
