“Keep Your Friends Close”

by

Keep Your Friends Close    by Paula Daly.  Natty and Sean are parents to 2 daughters and own and operate a small hotel in the lake district of England. Nattie’s college friend, Eve, comes to visit just as their younger daughter falls dangerously ill while away in France. When Natty rushes to  be at her daughter’s side, Eve steps in to ‘help out’. At first her administrations to the family seem kindly and well intended.  Very quickly, however, we learn that Eve has a plan to take over Natty’s husband, family and business AND… this isn’t the first time she’s done something like this.  Somewhat suspenseful although slow to start, the novel describes the marriage of Sean and Natty as solid, but it appeared frayed and dangling by a thread to me.  The husband, Sean, seems too easily taken in by Eve.  Natty is portrayed as overly emotional which gets her into deeper trouble with the police. While not quite plausible, the novel was still entertaining and the action picks up as it progresses.
