Summer Reading Suggestions

Summertime reading brings its own pleasures, especially the fact that you can read outdoors for long periods of time.  Two new novels that may entice you to stay outside longer are “The Rocks” by Peter Nichols and “Circling the Sun” by Paula McLain.9781594633317_p0_v4_s114x166

For those of us who cannot get away to the Mediterranean, you can vicariously live the experience by reading Peter Nichols’ newest novel “The Rocks.”  Set in present-day Mallorca, and the 1940s, the story revolves around two octogenarians, once married and now divorced, who encounter one another after years of mutual avoidance. After dying in the first few pages of the book, the author then goes back in time, and traces their romantic history.

Paula McLain is probably best known for her 2011 novel “The Paris Wife.” In that novel she focused on Hadley Richardson, Ernest Hemingway’s first wife.  In her newest novel “Circling the Sun,” she once again writes about another woman albeit an obscure historical figure. Beryl Markham was a female bush pilot in 1920s Kenya.  Being a woman flyer in the 1920s would probably give her some fame, but the fact that she had an affair with Denys Finch Hatton, think “Out of Africa,” probably will add some spice to this story.9781101885413_p0_v1_s114x166
