Reading Aloud to Children

by

Forty years ago a report issued by the Commission on Reading stated “The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.” That statement is as true today as it was forty years ago.

Reading picture books aloud enables the listener to develop vocabulary, language fluency and comprehension.  Audio read-alongs help children acquire important visual and print literacy skills.  “Readers” can follow the story through text and illustrations.  Those struggling with decoding can become less anxious about reading by listening and following along.

There are many titles and authors available to enable children to develop reading skills and grow these skills.  Playaway sets, which include an audiobook and print copies of the book, aloud children to be independent and pace their reading time.9781442433700_p0_v3_s118x184
