British author Brookner died Monday March 14th at age 87. Winner of the Booker Prize in 1984 for Hotel du lac, Brookner authored 24 novels. One of my favorite authors, her novels often featured female main characters who led solitary lives. Although the plots were unremarkable, her novels were the more remarkable for their ‘staid’ plots and lack of excitement. The language and characters are foremost and supercede the little action that occurs. Too much action would interfere with her command of language and singular protagonists. Brookner never married or had children.
