Fade Out by Nova Ren Suma (author of The Walls Around Us) is a great book for middle aged readers. The book is a light story about Dani Callanzano going through the worst summer of her life after being abandoned by everyone that she knows. Her dad moved out and is getting remarried to another woman, and her best friend Maya has moved away. As far as Dani concerned, her world is over. Her only refuge is the Little Art theater, the local indie-movie house, where she can watch all of her favorite black and white noir thrillers (and where her crush Jackson works). But one day Dani discovers a secret about Jackson that changes her outlook on his character and she finds herself investigating his life turning it into a real-life thriller just like her favorite films.
For middle school readers this book is perfect. Also, the book takes place in Woodstock, NY (re-named Shanosha in the book) and those who are familiar with the area will recognize the local landmarks mentioned.
