Tractor Otis is back again for another adventure. Author and illustrator Loren Long begins his newest book by dedicating the story to “the brave who run toward danger instead of away.” That inscription sums up the actions of heroic Otis.
It was hot and dry on the farm where Otis lived and worker. No one could remember the last time it had rained, but the farm hands continued to bale straw. Otis worked hard pulling the wagons of straw into the barn. At the end of the day, he just wanted to relax in the shade, but his friends the farm animals wanted to play tug-of-war.
One afternoon when everyone was relaxing, Otis saw a cat running into the barn. Then he realized that the barn was on fire. He raced in, and there he saw the tabby cat in the upper window of the barn. Otis rushed into the barn and tried to rescue the cat, but she wouldn’t leave.
As the story unfolds, we learn how Otis and his friends on the farm run toward danger and save the kittens and Otis as well.
Young readers who are fans of the series will enjoy Otis and his adventures with the kittens. The large illustrations help the reader visualize the story. The fire sequences may be frightening to very small children, but since everyone is rescued there is a happy ending.
