Two new recently acquired board books will appeal to very young “readers.” Leslie Patricelli is the author/illustrator of many board books. Her newest is “Nighty-Night.” This would be a great book to share with a child getting ready for bed. Her simple illustrations picture a young child, mom and dad as they go through their bedtime routine. The text is limited to from one to four words. The target audience is ages 0-3.
A more sophisticated new board book is “City Block” by Christopher Franceschelli, with art by Peskimo. Each page is filled with detailed drawings of cityscapes. From modes of transportation–cars, subways, buses, ferries– to places to visit–parks, museums, flea markets–to things to eat–pizza, nachos, sushi rolls–this imaginative board book will engage older toddlers and even kindergarteners. Although the text is limited to one or two words, the illustrations, sometimes with cut-away or fold out pages, will keep each reader fully engaged for a length of time.
