When Nico’s sister Sarah disappeared four years ago her life changed forever. The flurry of activity surrounding efforts to find her sister pushed Nico into the background of her own life-except she didn’t much mind because she had a secret: she had hated Sarah. Sarah was an emotionally and physically abusive sister. So, when she disappeared from a local park one day while going to meet her boyfriend, Nico was secretly relieved.
Cut to today when Nico’s parents get a call that Sarah has shown up at a Children’s shelter in Florida with a case of trauma-based amnesia and no memory of where she has been for the past four years- or much before that either. But this girl is much changed from the one Nico knew. She’s thin and drawn, where Sarah had been golden and athletic; timid and unsure, instead of brash and competitive; and strangest of all, sweet and kind, when she had once been mean and abusive.
Nico has her suspicions about Sarah. But her new seemingly-changed sister is the sister that she always wanted. Finally, they can be one happy family. Despite the happy ending, though, the dark details of that day continue to haunt Nico, and it becomes clear that more than one person knows the true story of what happened to Sarah.
