“The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown takes place on a remote, deserted island. A ship sinks in a hurricane and its cargo is lost- all except for some boxes of robots that landed on an island. When some playful otters accidentally flip the ON switch, Roz the robot comes to life. As an unfamiliar creature, the animal residents of the island are afraid of her and think she is going to harm them. They call her a monster. However, soon they begin to see that Roz is helpful and resourceful. She begins to adapt to their way of life and strangely finds a way to fit in. The robot manages to survive and even gains a family. Danger arrives when Roz’s owners learn she has survived. Recommended for grades 3 and up. Available on audio. A sequel coming out later this year.
