Let me start by saying that Patrick Ness is one of my favorite YA authors. He can do no wrong. That being said his newest book Release is an AMAZING and poetic read that everyone (not just fans like me) will enjoy.
Release takes place over 24 hours in the life of teen Adam Thorn (there is also an intertwining story but I will get to that later). Adam is 17, gay, lives with his Evangelical preacher family, dealing with his sexually inappropriate boss’s advances, and preparing for the going away party of his ex-boyfriend who he may (or may not) still be in love with. It’s a day of confrontation, running, sex, love, heartbreak, and maybe, just maybe, hope. He won’t come out of it unchanged.
The intertwining story is a fantasy/supernatural tale that is slightly confusing at first but still beautifully written about a magical faun who is following around his Queen in order to stop her from exacting revenge and destroying their entire world. Make sense? Not to me either, but it still someone works.
Great read, definitely for older readers however as there is some explicit content/subjects broached.
