According to an article last month in the Guardian, Sir Tim Berners Lee’s optimism on the equality of the World Wide Web is beginning to flag. He was in Washington recently to lobby against abolishing the protections that ensure net neutrality, a main concern of his, among others. He cites examples of AT&T trying to block Skype on I-Phones in 2009 and Verizon banning Google Wallet when it was trying to develop a similar app in 2011 as a warning against allowing ISPs (Internet service providers) to rank data based on fees paid to them. Lee is also concerned with the proliferation of “click-bait” ads and “fake news”, which have the opposite effect of his original goal to promote truth and democracy. Read the full article here.
