In the Shadow of the Sun

index (1)This teen novel by Anne Sibley O’Brien is set in North Korea in approximately 2011, in the early reign of the current supreme leader, Kim Jong-un. Mia and Simon Andrews accompany their father on one of his business trips, but become embroiled in the abuses suffered by those imprisoned in work camps. Mia finds a camera with several horrifying pictures of abused workers in a gift given to her by a local citizen. When her father is arrested, she and her brother flee the authorities and attempt to escape the country while carrying the camera. A very gripping story with facts about North Korea included, it is an eye- opener for many of us who are unfamiliar with the hardships endured by its people..
