Based on a real life woman who worked in advertising at Macy’s in the early 1920’s, ‘Lillian Boxfish’ is set on New Year’s Eve in 1985. During the course of her day, 85 year-old Lillian Boxfish sets out from her apartment in Murray Hill NYC to her usual New Year’s Eve restaurant. During the hours mounting to midnight, we follow Lillian as she encounters taxi drivers, strangers, muggers, bodega owners and restaurant managers. We learn about her start in advertising, writing poetry, her marriage and divorce. She leaves a memorable impression on everyone she meets. Her regrets and satisfaction with life are illustrated as she walks from Murray Hill down to the Battery, to Chelsea and Greenwich Village, Times Square and Penn Station. Happened to come across this title and fortuitously read it on New Year’s Eve. A good book to start the year with.
