Someone Else’s Shoes

British author Jojo Moyes’ latest offering stars 2 women in their 40’s who accidentally take the others’ gym bag and voila, their lives change. Nisha and Sam are at opposite ends of the social class. Nisha is married to a wealthy man and lives a privileged life with designer clothes and ease. She enjoys the best of everything without working or struggling. Sam works hard for a boss who is doing his best to get her fired. Her husband is depressed and barely leaves the couch. Her parents have come to expect her to care for them and everyone else’s needs get met except hers. When the accidental switch occurs, Sam puts on the expensive designer shoes as a lark. Before she returns the bag, she decides it can’t hurt to wear the shoes once to give her a confidence boost at a difficult sales meeting. As the lives of the two women collide, both their lives are overturned. Secondary characters flesh out the story and though both fall on hard times, the switched bags may end up changing both their lives for the better. Also available on audio. Recommended.

Out of Nowhere

Sandra Brown’s latest novel deals with a shooting at a country fair. Elle Portman suffers a devastating loss, and Calder Hudson is injured by the shooter, as he was pushing people down to the ground to survive. They are two of the witnesses who later remember specific details about the shooter, when interviewed by the police. All five of the witnesses are named during a news story and three are sent to a safe house. But will they be safe from the shooter? Brown is a superb writer, and the reader is kept guessing until the end as to who the shooter really was.

James and the Giant Peach

A musical version of Roald Dahl’s beloved James and the Giant Peach will have 6 performances in November at the 92nd Street Y in NYC. “This musical take on Dahl’s classic story is a delightfully off-kilter ode to the sweetness of friendship and finding one’s place in the world. Featuring a wickedly tuneful score by the Tony Award-nominated team of Pasek and Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, The Greatest Showman) and a curiously quirky book by Timothy Allen McDonald (Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley), critics rave: James and the Giant Peach is a “masterpeach!””

Musical Chairs

Bridget Stratton is looking forward to spending the summer at her country house in Connecticut with her boyfriend, Sterling. She is also anxious to meet the new violinist joining her musical trio. (Bridget is a cellist, and her good friend Will is a pianist). But best laid plans often go astray: she finds herself instead sharing the house with her two grown children, Isabel and Oscar. Ms. Poeppel has written a clever novel about family relationships, love and new beginnings. It is heavy on characterization, so you do need to keep juggling quite a few names in mind. I did find it very entertaining, and the author ties it all together very neatly at the end.

Wrong Place Wrong Time

Jen Brotherhood is looking out her picture window one night, waiting for her 18 year old son Todd to come home, when she finally sees him coming up the block. But she has a bad feeling, as a stranger approaches him. She rushes outside and to her horror, Todd is stabbing the stranger with a knife, and kills him. The police are called, and Todd is arrested. Jen wakes up the next morning, only to find Todd home in his room; somehow it is the day before this horror began. She continues to go back in time until she can unravel what happened and why. This is a wild plot, and you need to pay close attention to the details in order to understand what is happening. The novel is packed with suspense, to say the least…
