This parenting title was first published in 2015. “The Collapse of Parenting: How We Hurt Our Kids When We Treat Them Like Grown-Ups,” is a modern day primer about how to raise children with integrity and respect. Dr. Sax’s view is that one of the main problems with American children today is that they turn to their peers too often and not enough to their parents. Sax believes that we are living in a culture of disrespect not seen in most other countries. Children in the USA most often will listen to their friends and peers instead of their parents. The first half of the book discusses what the issue stems from. The second half discusses solutions. He argues that American parents are often caught up in making their children happy and therefore give in to their demands and desires too easily because parents want their children to love them. Sax believes parents’ beliefs and expectations should be adhered to. Instead, children most often consider their friends opinions instead. He examines the over-prescription of medications and the fragility of today’s teenagers. Recommended. Also available in audio.
